About Us

Establishment

The Department of Applied Chemistry was established as a separate department in 1989. The Chemistry section was as a part of the Department of Chemistry Fuel & Metallurgy since 1926.

Departments

The department offers academic programmes such as B. Tech and M. Tech programmes 5 year integrated M.Sc in Chemistry, 2 year M.Sc in Chemistry admission , M.Phil in Applied Chemistry . Admission for all courses is through NET/GATE or an all India level test conducted by ISM or IIT-JEE.

Research

The department also offers Ph. D programme, for which candidates are selected through NET/GATE or ISM Entrance Test.

Academics

The Department offers Ph. D degree courses in Applied Chemistry, apart from teaching at UG/PG level for B.Tech/ M.Tech students. Department also offers 2 years M.Sc in chemistry (started in 2006).

Research

The department has undertaken research projects in various areas like :
i) Characterization and utilization of fly ash
ii) Development of corrosion inhibitors for casing steel used in oil wells during acidization
iii) Prevention of scale formation in oil wells
iv) Beneficiation of china clay
v) Thermal analysis
vi) Organometallic compounds as chiral catalysts
vii) Synthesis of frother reagents
viii) Porous and nanomaterials for using as heterogeneous catalysts for different reactions
Presently there are seven full time Ph.D students and a number of part time scholars working in the department.
